Benefits of Probe Betting

A large component of successful gambling includes being able to read other players well. This can be done through a variety of ways, with one of the most reliable being through probe betting.

What is Probe Betting?

Probe betting, or feeler betting, is the process of putting test bets out to see how other players will react. It can involve a sacrifice, or investment, but will heed results that can win you a lot of cash in the long run. Feeler bets force other players to react to your bet and expose their habits. Take note of their reactions as well as their resulting hands so that you can better read them in the future.

What Size Feeler Bet Should Be Made?

It is a good rule of thumb to place a probe bet of at least 1/3 the size of the pot. This amount should be increased if previous bettors have folded. Be sure that you are careful not to over bet the pot as well. However, refrain from limping in to the pot at all costs. Your hand will look very weak and you will expose yourself to losses by doing this. Likewise, a small bet will not allow you to gain the information you need.

Probe bets are a useful tool that any serious gambler should keep in their poker repertoire. It not only blocks you from being exposed, but it also forces other players to react quickly. The key to probe betting is to uncover others habits and then use it to your advantage in future hands.
